1981/2 Barry Chick

For the 1982 season I had a new handbuilt 531 Barry Chick frame which I built up with a mix of Campagnolo and Huret parts. Raced it, crashed it badly twice (new head tube needed first time, new forks the second time). A couple of years later I sold it to finance an engine rebuild on my first car, and always regretted letting it go. But I ended up with my dad’s identical frame, which I had raced many times in 1982 when mine was away being fixed. So I had it restored by Mercian in about 2005, and rebuilt it using all new old stock parts including brand new Huret Jubilee gears, and Campag Gran Sport cranks with Super Record rings – as close as possible to the spec of my original bike. I later rebuilt a pair of my dad’s old Gran Sport/Mavic GP4 wheels, using almost new Mavic Module E rims so I could use clincher instead of tubs. Very happy with it – did the first Eroica Brittania on it and it was lovely to ride.

In its current incarnation with Module E rims and Veloflex clinchers.
