1981 Honda CX500

This was my first big bike – previously I’d had learner bikes, then a DT175 and a Honda Superdream. Bought this for 300 quid in 1986, fixed it up a bit, bolted on ex-BMW Krauser panniers, a horrible fibreglass top box and a big tank bag, and buggered off to Pompeii with a mate. First time I’d been more than 50 miles from home on a bike! We did 4000 miles in three weeks, no major problems except radiator drain plug sheared off in Pompeii. Araldite (the greek goddess of bodgers) to the rescue and it was still like that when I sold it a few months later to pay for my credit card bill. Always regretted selling it, and have recently bought another one just like it – I kept the luggage from the original so I’m going to build a replica….
